Biennial, 50-200 cm, with short adpressed, ± soft whitish or yellowish stellate-tomentose indumentum. Stem robust, distinctly angular, usually with numerous branches. Basal leaves lanceolate to lanceolate-oblong, entire, rarely obscurely crenulate, 10-45 x 3-10 cm, petiole ± winged, 2-7 cm; cauline similar but smaller, upper ovate to suborbicular, acuminate to caudate, obtusely auriculate at base, usually undulate. Inflorescence with numerous, robust, erect-spreading branches, with congested clusters of 2- numerous flowers. Bracts broadly ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, acuminate; Pedicels to 12 mm; bracteoles small, lanceolate. Calyx 3-5 mm, lobes linear-lanceolate, acute. Corolla yellow, 20-30 cm diam., without pellucid glands, stellate-tomentose outside. Stamens 5, anthers reniform, filaments with whitish-yellow wool up to anthers. Capsule oblong-ovate, 4-7 x 34 mm, densely stellate-tomentose. 2n = 36. Fl. 6-9. Pinus forest, carnfields, dry places, steppe, s.l.-2500 m.
