Biennial, 100-150 cm, densely adpressed white stellate-tomentose, often glabrescent, eglandular. Stem robust, angular, with numerous branches. Basal leaves broadly or narrowly lanceolate, 15-70 x 5-13 cm, acute or acuminate, entire, petiole indistinct or to 10 cm; cauline similar but smaller, upper longacuminate. Inflorescence with numerous thick branches, forming broadly ovatepyramidal panicle, with ± congested clusters of 3-11 flowers. Bracts lanceolate to linear, long acuminate or caudate. Pedicels to 16 mm; bracteoles linear. Calyx 3-5 mm, lobes linear to linear-lanceolate, acute. Corolla yellow, 20-30 mm diam., without pellucid glands, stellate-tomentose outside. Stamens 5, anthers reniform, 2 anterior often obliquely inserted, filaments with whitish-yellow wool, 2 anterior glabrous above. Capsule oblong-ovate, 4-7 x 3-5 mm, tomentose, glabrescent. Fl. 6-9. Abies nordmanniana forest, meadows, 300-1800 m.
