Tree to 25 m, suckering freely. Bark smooth, greenish or olive-grey. Buds reddish-brown, acuminate, slightly viscid. Leaves of long shoots ovate, cordate at base, acuminate, irregularly serrate-dentate, silky-haired beneath; leaves of short shoots 3-7 x 3-7 cm or broader, suborbicular, obtuse or shortly acute, subcordate, rounded or even broadly cuneate at base, sinuately crenate-dentate, glabrous, dark green above, lighter green or glaucescent beneath. Petiole to 8 cm, glabrous, strongly flattened. Catkins 4-8 cm in flower, 8-14 cm in fruit, very compact. Bracts palmatifid, villous-ciliate on margins. Capsule bottle-like, 2-valved, glabrous. Fl. 3-4. Deciduous forest, mixed forest , Pinus nigra and P. sylvestris forest, s.l.-2000 m.
N.W. Africa, Europe, Lebanon, Caucasus, Siberia, N. Mongolia and N. China, in the southern parts of its range mostly in the mountains. Euro-Sib. element.
