Plant 4-25 cm. Fronds tufted, from a short horizontal rootstock clothed with persistent leaf-bases. Rachis polished, dark-brown then black, with a few scattered, narrowly lanceolate, pale rusty-brown scales; lamina 2-pinnate, pinnules pinnate or pinnatifid, ultimate pinnules broadly ovate, convex, completely glabrous when mature. Sori protected by reflex margin of pinnule and by an evanescent fimbriate indusium. Spores ripe 6-onwards. Crevices in dry rocks, s.l.-1000 m.
Mediterranean area to W. Himalayas.
