Stems tufted, 12-25 cm, erect, geniculate or prostrate at base, smooth, glabrous, green or glaucous. Leaf sheaths glabrous, uppermost ± inflated. Ligule to 1 mm. Leaf blades 3-8 cm x 1-2.5 mm, margins and adaxial surface scabrid. Spikes solitary, very rarely 2 per sheath, 1-10 cm , with 8-20 spikelets, straight or more usually strongly incurved. Glumes longer than internodes, lanceolate, 4.5-7 mm, acuminate, keel unwinged. Anthers oblong, 0.5-1 mm, yellow. Caryopsis ellipsoid, 3-3.5 mm, dark brown. Cleistogamous. [2n = 38J. Fl. 4-7. Clifffaces, littoral limestone rocks, beaches, saline coastal sand and alluvial flats, estuarine silt, fields, roadside ditches, s.l.-100 m.
W. Europe, Mediterranean area, S.W. to C. Asia . Introduced in Australia, New Zealand, S. Africa and America.
