Annual. Stems 2-70 cm, procumbent or ascending from and branched at base, glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous, uppermost usually inflated. Leaf blades distinct from sheath, 2-7 mm broad, acuminate, glaucous, villous or sparsely pilose. Inflorescence oblong, elliptic or ovoid, 1-3.5 cm x 4-12 mm. Spikelets 3-4 mm. Glumes ciliate on keel, glabrous on margin; lower glume 2.2-3 mm, upper 2.6-3.3 mm. Lemma 3-3.6 mm, unawned. Palea obtuse, emarginate or praemorse, 2-veined. Stamens 3, anthers 0.8-1 mm. Caryopsis oblong-ellipsoid, 1-1.2 mm. Fl. 4-9. Saline steppe, edge of saline lakes, nr streams, gravelly banks in dry river beds, wet sand, nr s.l.-1950 m.
