Annual. Stems 10-50 cm, erect or geniculately ascending. Leaf sheaths hairy. Leaf blades to 15 cm x 6 mm, hairy. Panicle to 18 x 6 cm, lax, usually racemose and secund, of few spikelets; branches and pedicels slender, sometimes flexuous, somewhat shorter than or equalling spikelets. Spikelets 20-50 x 7-15 mm, broadly oblong or broadly ovate-Ianceolate. Glumes broadly lanceo1ate, lower 5-7 mm, upper 6-9 mm. Lemma 8-11 x6-9 mm, with magrin clearly angled c. halfway from entire or shallowly toothed apex; awns to 10 mm, at least uppermost spreading or recurved at maturity. Palea shorter than lemma. Anthers to 1.5 mm. 2n = 14. Fl. 5-7. Waste places, steppe, hillsides and forest clearings, s.l.-2200 m.
