Annual, without basal vegetative shoots. Stems 10-40 cm. Cauline leaves sparse, glabrous. Panicle lax, 1,2 x branched, pedicels solitary or paired. Spikelets only 1-7, ovate, 10-20 x 8-10 mm, shorter than pedicels. Glumes spreading horizontally, broadly orbicular-reniform when opened out, 5-7 mm, deeply concave, often purplish-brown. Florets 10-18. Lemmas broadly cordate, 6-8 mm, glabrous or adpressed-pilose, 7-9-veined, in side view shortly and broadly subacuminate, ivory. Palea broad, minutely hairy on the 2 narrow keels. Fl. 4-5. Open Pinus brutia woodland, phrygana, rocky limestone slopes, dunes, grassy places, fallow fields and waste places, s.l.-320 m.
S. Europe; naturalised elsewhere, including N. America, Japan and Australia.
