Annual, without vegetative shoots. Stem 8-40 cm. Cauline leaves sparse, to 2 mm broad, glabrous. Panicle subcylindrical, 2-10 cm, 2-3 x branched. Pedicels 1-6 mm, ascending to erect, longer or shorter than spikelets. Spikelets numerous, ascending, ovate, 4-5 x 3-4 mm, acute. Glumes suborbicular but deeply concave, 2.5-3 mm, minutely hairy on back, submuticous. Florets 5-7. Lemmas of similar form to glumes. Palea broadly elliptic, as long as lemma, obtuse. Fl. 5-6. Pinus and Quercus woods, rocky slopes, fallow fields, on limestone, chalk and shale, 350-1800 m.
