Tufted annual, 10-30 cm. Upper leaf blade linear-lanceolate, short, 1.5-3 mm broad, glabrous, pilose or ciliate. Spike obconical, 3-5 cm in fruit, breaking off as a unit. Vestigial spikelets usually 3. Fertile spikelets only 2, divergent; glumes obovate, subventricose, 5-8 mm, veins scabridulous, apex truncate and bearing 3-5 setaceous, 20-35 mm awns; two lower lemmas exserted from glumes, awns as long as or shorter than those of subtending glumes. 2n =14. Fl. 5-6. Mainly on calcareous soils, in steppe, open Quercus scrub, Pinus brutia woods, vineyards, corn and fallow fields, s.l-1500 m.
