Perennial, usually densely caespitose with few or no stolons. Stems 10-30 cm, with several basal and 2-4 well developed cauline leaves. Leaves sparsely to rather densely ciliate at base and on margins. Inflorescence of 3-10 unequally pedunculate heads, heads usually 8-15-flowered. Perianth segments 2.5-3.5 mm, subequal, ovate to narrowly ovate, acuminate, light to blackish or reddish-brown, with inconspicuous scarious margins. Anthers 0.7-1.2 mm, 3/4-2 x filaments. Capsule shorter than perianth, ovoid to globose, light to dark brown. Seeds 1.1-1.3 mm, caruncle 1/4-1/2 xseed, Fl. 4-7. Grassland, meadows, woods, under Rhododendron caucasicum, s.l.-2200 m.
