Perennial, caespitose or with creeping rhizome. Stems 5-60 cm, erect or ascending, with 3-6 leaves. Leaves terete, unitubulose, perfectly septate. Inflorescence usually broad, of 5-20 heads; heads 5-l5-flowered. Perianth segments 2.5-3.5 mm, equal or outer longer, rarely inner slightly longer, ovate to lanceolate, all acute or inner obtuse, often mucronate, variable in colour. Anthers 0.7-1 mm, equalling or longer than filaments. Capsule 2.5-4 mm, usually exceeding perianth, ovoid-trigonous, acute or rarely obtuse, with short mucro. Fl. 4-8. By streams, wet places, s.l.-3000 m.
