Perennial, 30-70 cm, rhizome borizontal. Stems with 1-3 alternate leaves below the opposite leaves of the first dichotomy, retrorsely pubescent. Basal leaves palmatifid to at least 4/5 , 5-10 cm diam.; segments obovate-rbombic, incised or 1-2-pinnatifid. Longest bracts 4-6 mm. Pedicels glandular-pubescent, remaining erect after flowering. Sepals 8-9 mm, glandular-pubescent; awn 2-3 mm. Petals obovate, entire, 15-18 mm, lilac-blue . Mericarps adpressed hairy. Fl. 6-7. Coniferous forest, meadows, rocky slopes, 1600-2100 m. 
Temperate Eurasia; introduced in N. America. Euro-Sib. element.
