Erect or ascending annual, 15-30 cm. Leaflets 0,8-1,2 cm, rhomboidal to obovate, mostly apiculate. Inflorescence short-peduncled to subsessile, many flowered. Corollate flowers 5-7 in one row. Calyx densely'hirsute, lobes equal. Corolla purple 8-10 mm, c. 1,3 x as long as the calyx. Fruiting head 12-18 mm, globose to ovoid, forming a dense, greyish-pink hairy ball. Sterile flowers with flexuous, elongating, plumose lobes. FI. 4-5. Grassy steppe, fallow fields on heavy soil, stony calcareous ground, s.l.-2000 m.
