Perennial with slender rhizomes. Stems 15-32 cm, caespitose or solitary. Sheaths obliquely truncate or with a linear lamina to 20 cm. Bracts 2, not much dilated, lower erect, appearing as prolongation of stem and overtopping inflorescence; uppermost bract patent and shorter than subtended spikelet. Inflorescence a fascicle of 1-3 sessile spikelets. Spikelets 8-12 x 1.5-2 mm; glumes numerous, broadly triangular-ovate, obtuse, purplish-brown or blackish, midrib and margin pallid and membranous. Stamens 3. Nut c. 1.5 mm, as long as glumes, ovate-oblong, yellowish or greyish-brown. Fl. 5-7. Marshy places, nr s.l.-70 m.
