Dwarf shrub, with branches ascending or erect, up to 10-15 cm tall. Leaves stipulate, opposite at least below, linear-oblong, often strongly revolute, diminishing to bracteate below and throughout the inflorescence. Flowers 3-8, long-pedicelled. Seeds 4-6, often retained in the mature capsule even when dehisced and wide open. Fl. 3-4. Calcareous hills, in maquis and garigue, or on sand-dunes in Pine forest, s.l.-250 m. Two varieties may be recognised:
1. Youngest leaves glandular pubescent var. thymifolia
1. Youngest leaves ± glabrous, the margins sometimes setose var. viridis
