Stems 20 cm or more. Leaves dark green, 6-12 mm, once or twice dichotomous, usually rather rigid; segments linear, flattened, denticulate. Nut 4-5 x 2-2.5 mm, with terminal spine 4-7 mm and two reflexed-patent spines 2-3.5 mm near base. Pools, ditches, canals, brackish lagoons, nr  s.l.-1750 m.

Almost throughout temperate Eurasia except in desert areas. Euro-Sib. element.
