Perennial herb, with ± horizontal rootstock. Stems ascending to erect, 10-15 cm. Leaves ovate, cordate, acute to acuminate, finely adpressed-pilose; basal numerous, long-petiolate to 15 cm; lamina 4·5-9 x 2·5-4·5 cm, with prominent arcuate lateral nerves; cauline shortly petiolate to subsessile, smaller. Inflorescence ebracteate. Pedicels c. 3 mm in flower, patent to arcuate-recurved and to 10 mm in fruit. Calyx lobes ovate-oblong, acute. Corolla bright blue, tube c. 2 mm; limb ± flat, 4-5 mm diam. Nutlets elliptic, to 3·2 x 2 mm, margin entire, ciliate. Fl. 3-5. Castanea forest, CorylusScrub, shady banks, damp rock ledges, 20-1000 m.
