Biennial, long adpressed-hirsute; pedicels long, curving upwards in fruit. Stems to 60 cm, suberect. Basal leaves linear-lanceolate, cauline narrowly linear. Calyx 4-5,3 mm. Corolla deep blue-violet, 6-7 mm, limb c. 2 x length of tube, divided to c. ½ into broadly ovate, very obtuse lobes. Scales c. 2 mm, linear, very narrow, broadening slightly into truncate-retuse apex. Anthers 1,2-2 mm. Style 6-8 mm, included-or slightly exserted. Nutlets orbicular, 7,5-9 mm diam., disc with keel of blunt teeth, wing coarsely crispulate-dentate, teeth glochidiate, rarely wing subentire with marginal glochids. Fl. 6. Steppe, 800-2000 m.
