Plant 20-40 cm. Rhizome short, erect. Fronds tufted, the outer spreading and sterile, the inner erect and fertile. Petioles shorter than lamina, sparsely scaly. Lamina of sterile leaves lanceolate, 1-pinnate, pinnae coriaceous, linear-oblong, apex subacute. Pinnae of fertile leaves linear, 1,5-2 x 1-2 mm, apex acute, broader at base. Sori united in a broad band on either side of the midrib, occupying almost the whole leaf under-surface. Indusium membranous, continuous along the edge of the pinna. Spores ripe 5--9. In beech woods, on shady banks, s.l.-1400 m.
