Rhizomatous perennial herb. Stems ascending, 15-75 cm, usually branched above, ± sparsely covered with white spreading pilose hairs, becoming dense and lanate at base. Leaves yellowish, somewhat fleshy; lower ovate-lanceolate, 3-10 x 1-4 cm , apex acute or obtuse, base attenuate, margin entire or denticulate, sparsely pilose; upper oblong, 3-7 x 0·5-4 cm, sessile, semiamplexicaul and somewhat auriculate at base. Capitula radiate, 3-20 in lax corymbs or racemes. Involucre 1-1.75 cm broad; phyllaries imbricate, 4-5-seriate; outer and median linear-lanceolate, 3-7 x 1-2 mm, with herbaceous, usually reflexed or squarrose tips, minutely glandular and sparsely white pilose; inner membranous, linear-acuminate, 8-10 mm erect, Ray flowers 20-45, ligules 5-8 x 1.5 mm. Disc flowers 5-5.5 mm. Achenes c. 1.75 mm, glabrous or sparsely pubescent at apex. Pappus whitish, 4-4.5 mm, hairs 15-20, scabrous, free at base, brittle. Fl. 7-9. In damp, usually saline ground, 550-1900 m.
