Plant fruticose, ± curry-scented, 8-42 cm; young shoots white-felted, eglandular. Stems much branched below. Leaves narrowly linear, 1-2 cm, with revolute margins. Capitula ovoid, 4-5 mm, few to numerous, in dense corymbs. Phyllaries irregularly imbricate, adpressed, glossy brassy yellow. Marginal flowers female. Fl. 3-6. Macchie on limestone, Pinus brutia forest on serpentine, chalky cliff-tops, s.l.-700 m.
Italy, Balkans, Cyprus, Lebanon, Cyrenaica, N.W. Africa. Subsp. stoechas occurs in S. Europe west of W. Jugoslavia.
