Perennial , stem erect, c. 70 cm, branched only above with several capitula in a raceme. Leaves stiff, papery when dry, sparsely hirsute; lower oblong-cordate, petiolate, lamina c. 14-15 x 9-11 cm; median few, lanceolate, narrowed towards base; upper linear-lanceolate, sessile, bract-like. Involucre c. 25-28 x 17-25 mm, ovoid. Appendages only partly concealing basal part of phyllaries, dark brown, triangular , with 7-9 cilia on each side, ending in a 6-10 mm spine. Flowers rose-purple. Pappus c. 8 mm. Fl. 6. Alt. 450-600 m.
