Pubescent, often greyish perennial with a thick rootstock; stems 15-75 cm, faintly striate to grooved, usually densely tomentellous below. Basal leaves 1-2-pinnate, lamina oblong to triangular in outline, ultimate segments narrowly elliptic to ovate, 1-2 cm, lobed to pinnatisect, incised-dentate to crenate. Umbels 15-20-rayed, longest rays when in fruit 1-1 ¼ x the shortest; umbellules c. 20-flowered; bracts usually absent, occasionally 1-2, deciduous. Fruit 6-8 x c. 5 mm, obovate, sparsely hairy to glabrous; margin c. 1 mm wide, glabrous; commissures glabrous. Fl. 5-7. Rocky slopes, cliffs, under Quercus, 100-2000 m.
