Stem 20-40 cm, erect or sometimes floating. Leaves both erect and floating, 4-6 mm broad, keeled, triangular in transverse section. Inflorescence simple; female capitula 2-4, lower ones usually pedunculate, peduncle united to main axis. Male capitula 3-6, remote. Anthers 1-2 mm. Fruit 4-5 mm, ellipsoid, stipitate; style 3-4 mm, straight. Fl. 5-8. Shallow pools and streams, wet soil, 1900-2300 m.
