Tall, climbing shrub to 20 m; stems thorny at least below. Leaves broadly ovate, rounded to subcordate at base, 4-11 x 3-10 cm, usually thinner than in S. aspera and margin usually smooth. Flowers in, a 2-14-flowered umbel borne on a solitary, axillary, 5-15 mm peduncle as long as or longer than pedicels. Male perianth segments 5,5-7 mm, pale tan. Berries red. Fl 5. Pinus brutia forest with macchie, deciduous forest and scrub, on flood plains and in valleys nr water, s.l-760 m.
Bulgaria, Greece, Latakia, Transcaucasia, N. Iran. Euxine element.
