Usually biennial, 30-200 cm, densely viscose-villous throughout, hairs multicellular, mostly glandular. Stem thick, simple or with few branches, terete below, subangular above. Basal leaves undivided, petiole 3-5 cm, lamina broadly ovate, coarsely obtusely crenate, truncate or subcordate at base, 10-25 x 5-13 cm; upper cauline smaller, crenulate, cordate-amplexicaul. Inflorescence cylindrical, dense, many-flowered. Bracts triangular-lanceolate to lanceolate-linear, lower denticulate, longer than calyx, upper shorter, entire. Pedicels 1-3 mm, ebracteolate. Calyx 6-10 mm, with unequal, ovate-lanceolate or oblong, obtuse or acutish lobes. Corolla yellow, 26-33 mm diam., glandular outside. Filaments with whitish-yellow and purplish-violet wool, 2 anterior glabrous near apex, anthers decurrent, 4-5 mm. Capsule broadly ovoid to subglobose, 7-9 x 6.5-8 mm, densely glandular. Fl. 6-8. Forests, riversides, meadows, roadsides, 400-1000 m.
