Perennial with short swollen nodular rhizome. Stems 40-125 cm, 4-angled, purplish, glabrous except in floral region. Leaves ± purple-veined, shortly petiolate ; lamina ovate, 6-13 x 3-7 cm, base truncate to cordate, margin ± serrate. Inflorescence subfoliate; lower bracts large, ovate, acute to acuminate, upper narrowly lanceolate to linear, acuminate. Cymes distant, axillary, 5-10-flowered, with 1,5-4,5 cm peduncle; pedicels 9-16 mm, glandular. Bracteoles 3,5-5 mm, linear, sparingly glandular. Calyx lobes ovate, glabrous; scarious margin very narrow, whitish. Corolla 6-8,5 mm; upper lobes purple, lower lobes and tube pale greenish-purple to yellowish; stamens included; staminode obtriangular, retuse . Capsules 6-8 mm, ovoid, acute. Fl. 7. Streamsides, grassy places, macchie, 400-2275 m.
Temperate Eurasia except Mediterranean area. Introduced in eastern N. America. Euro-Sib. element.
