Shrub or tree up to 12-25 m. Young branches pubescent or glabrous. Leaf blade 3-5-lobed to 1/2, 1,5-6,0 x 2,5-8,0 cm, cordate at base, lobes entire or fewlobulate , usually hairy below, at least on the main veins; petiole pubescent or glabrous, 1,5-6,0 cm, lactiferous. Flowers in upright, pubescent corymbs. Fruit wings spreading horizontally, 15-27 x 5-11 mm; nutlets shortly hairy or glabrous, compressed, ovate-orbicular; loculus glabrous. - Very variable in leaf shape. Two subspecies may be distinguished on the basis of indumentum :
1. Nutlets velvety-pubescent; young shoots and petioles densely hairy subsp. campestre
1. Nutlets glabrous; young shoots and petioles usually glabrous  . subsp. leiocarpum
Distribution of species: most of Europe, Caucasia, N. Iran, N.W. Africa. Euro-Sib. element.
