Ascending or erect perennial; flowering stems 20-60 cm, pubescent with long and short eglandular hairs and usually with few short glandular hairs. Leaves digitate; leaflets 5 or 7, oblong-obovate to linear-lanceolate or sometimes cuneate-obovate, 10-50 x 5-25 mm, serrate, incised-serrate to pinnatisect to the base, sometimes doubly so, on both sides ± villous, green or grey. Flowers in cymes. Epicalyx segments linear-lanceolate, as long as or slightly shorter than sepals which are triangular-ovate, 5-8 mm. Petals yellow, obcordate, 6-10 mm, longer than sepals. Achenes rugose, winged; style conical at the base, shorter than achene. FI. 5-7. Meadows, pastures, wet and shady places, s.l.-2300m.
In Turkey I can recognize three main informal groups which integrade to some extent. Notes are given on some other specimens which do not fit into the three groups.
1. Sepals 3,5-4 mm; petals 6-7 mm; leaflets obovate-cuneate, pinnatisect, divided into linear-lanceolate teeth Group C
1. Sepals 5-8 mm; petals 7-10 rom; leaflets oblong-obovate to linear-lanceolate, serrate to pinnatisect with triangular or oblong teeth
  2. Leaflets serrate, teeth triangular, acute, 6-8 on each side Group A
  2. Leaflets incised-serrate to pinnatisect, teeth oblong, acute or obtuse, 7- 10 on each side Group B
Distribution of species: C. & S. Europe, S. Russia, Caucasia, Syria, Iran, C. Asia, .N.W. Afri.ca, and introduced in N. & S. America.
