Rhizome densely covered with brown, narrowly lanceolate scales. Fronds 10-40 cm, 2-pinnate, petiole as long as lamina, black shining, glabrous. Ultimate segments thin, pale glaucous-green, cuneate, shortly stalked, with 2-8 broad lobes in the upper part, vein free, midrib absent. Sori on recurved marginal lobes, several on each lobe. Spores ripe 1-10. In crevices on limestone, in tufa and in base rich soil, s.l.-800m.
Widespread in temperate and subtropical regions ofthe New and Old World, lacking in southern S. America.
