Plant to at least 100 cm; stems branched, leafy. Leaves to 5 cm x 0.2-1.2 mm. Filaments 5-12 mm or more, anthers 1.2-1.5 mm. Peduncles 12 mm in fruit; carpels 1-5. Achenes 1.5-3.4 x 0.6-1.4 mm, slightly curved, dorsal margin usually keeled and muricate, ventral and part of lateral surfaces also sometimes slightly muricate; beak 0.7-2 mm, stipe ± absent or to 0.9 mm. Fl. 4-9. Lakes, ponds, rivers, canals, in fresh or brackish water, s.l.-1950 m.
Widespread in N. Hemisphere, more rare in tropics and S. hemisphere.
