Stems 2.5-40 cm, glabrous. Leaf sheaths scabridulous on ribs, uppermost ± inflated. Ligule 7-10 mm. Leaf blades 3-20 cm x 2.5-6 mm. Panicle 3-9 x 2.5-3.5 cm, oblong-pyramidal, greenish at first, becoming pale golden-yellow. Spikelets in groups of 3-5 at ends of branches, with dark green shortly villous pedicels. Sterile spikelets 6-8 mm, with 8-12 distichous, imbricate, ovate lemmas; glumes linear-lanceolate, 3-3.5 mm. Fertile spikelets with linear- lanceolate glumes 3.5-4 mm and ovate lemma 2-2.5 mm; lemma bifid at apex, with 6-10 mm awn from sinus. Sterile rudiment c. 0.5 mm, its awn slightly shorter than that of fertile lemma, 4-7 mm. Fl. 4-5. Lightly grazed grassy slopes, lake margins, wall tops, s.l.-50 m.
