Densely caespitose perennial. Sterns 25-40 cm, weakly scabrid above. Leaf sheaths open to base, glabrous, blades deciduous. Leaf blades 0.3-0.5 mm broad, scabrid, pruinose ; veins 5, ribs 3; sclerenchyrna strands 3, stout, sometimes with additional smaller strands, rarely confluent. Panicle 3-7 cm, slightly interrupted; branches weakly scabrid. Spikelets 5.8-6.9 mm, pruinose, with 3-5 florets. Upper glume oblong-lanceolate, 2.6-3.6 x 1-1.2 mm, abruptly acuminate. Lemma subulate-lanceolate to subulate, 3.6-4.9 x 1.3-1.5 mm, glabrous or ciliate. Awn usually less than 1/2 as long as lemma. 2n = 14. Fl. 4-7. Steppe , alpine meadows, Quercus pubescens  scrub, open Pinus nigra woods, wheat fields, 400-2800 m.
