Elymus elongatus
Elymus elongatus
Ssp. elongatus: Putaotu; Ssp. ponticus: Çayırputası; Ssp. salsus: Çorak putaotu; Ssp. turcicus: Puslu putaotu
Caespitose perennial. Stems 35-75 cm, robust, usually glabrous. Leaves 2.5-5 mm broad when expanded, very rigid, usually convolute, prominently and closely ribbed, sparsely spinulose and with scattered short bristles on upper surface, glabrous beneath, lower sometimes densely and minutely pubescent on both surfaces. Spikes usually 10-25 cm, erect, lax. Spikelets strongly compressed laterally. Glumes usually 7-9 mm, subequal, indurate-coriaceous, oblong, broadly obtuse or truncate at apex, sometimes emarginate. Lemma 9-11 mm, glabrous, obtuse or apiculate.
1. Plants greyish-white, especially below, pruinose; leaves on both surfaces and lower sheaths densely and minutely pubescent; glumes scabrid on veins subsp. salsus
1. Plants green or glaucous-green; leaves and sheaths not minutely pubescent; glumes glabrous, only midvein slightly scabrid towards apex
2. Leaf sheaths not ciliate; rachis usually glabrous on main angles, lower internodes usually as long as spikelets; spikelets usually 15 mm, with 5-7 florets; glumes 5-7-veined; palea with cilia less than 0.1 mm on keels in upper half subsp. elongatus
2. Lower leaf sheaths shortly ciliate; rachis sparsely spinulose-ciliate, lower internodes longer than spikelets; spikelets larger; palea with cilia longer than 0.1 mm
3. Spikelets 17-20 mm, usually with 7-9 florets; glumes 7-9-veined, sometimes glabrous on inner surface at apex; palea with cilia less than 0.3 mm in upper 2/3 of keels; anthers 2.5-3.5 mm subsp. turcicus
3. Spikelets 17-25 mm, usually with 7-12 florets; glumes 5-7-veined, minutely strigillose on inner surface at apex; palea with cilia c. 0.3 mm along whole length of keels; anthers 4.5-5.5 mm subsp. ponticus
