Perennial herb to 40 cm, densely and stiffly hairy. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, 3-10 x 1-3 cm, deeply sinuate-margined, pinnatifid or pinnatisect. Scapes branched, broadly winged. Spikes compact. Spikelets 3-4-flowered. Outer bract narrowly triangular, 6-9 mm, membranous, subulately acuminate; first inner bract slightly longer and much broader than outer bract, herbaceous, strongly convex with 2 ciliate dorsal keels produced into 2-3 large, 2-3-toothed appendages; other inner bracts like outer bract. Calyx infundibular, tube puberulous; limb truncate, violet; veins terminating below margin. Petals white to cream. 2n = 16. Fl. 5-7. Coastal cliffs, beaches, sandy shores, pasture, s.l.-100 m.
