Perennial herb, 20-30 cm, with strongly thickened, few-branched caudex. Leaves broadly elliptic or oblong-ovate, 6-20 x 3-5 cm, obtuse, acuminate, tapering into a narrow petiole. Scapes branching near or above middle , corymbose-paniculate, Spikes rather short and compact, subscorpioid, sometimes densely clustered. Spikelets 4-5 mm, 2-4-flowered. Outer bract broadly ovate, 1-1.4 mm, broadly hyaline-margined; first inner bract similar but twice as long, ± hyaline; second inner bract oblong-obovate, 3 x as long as outer bract, concave, broadly scarious-rnargined; remaining bracts smaller and scarious. Calyx 3.5-5 mm, obconical to infundibular, tube pilose; limb shallowly 5-1obed, lobes rounded, obtuse. Petals Violet. Fl. 6-9. Saline places inland, 900-1200 m.
