Perennial herb to at least 1 m, with a short woody rhizome and the habit of Gentiana asclepiadea, Stems virgate, simple or branched above, pilose on angles. Cauline and floral leaves shortly petiolate, ovate-lanceolate, 4-10 x 1.5-4 cm, entire or irregularly serrate or dentate, sparsely pilose. Flowers 2 per verticillaster, large, c. 1/2 as long as floral leaves. Calyx 8-11 mm, divided to 1/2 into lanceolate, glandular-villous teeth. Corolla buff-pink , 30-50 mm, upper lip obsolescent, emarginate, lower lip 3 x tube. Fruit baccate, obscurely 4-lobed, c. 6 mm, with a fleshy purplish-black pericarp . Fl. 6-7. Fagus forest, Quercus macchie, stony hillsides, 60-1600 m.
