Plant densely caespitose with poorly developed rhizome; intravaginal shoots present. Stems 50-100 cm, rigid, with 2-6 basal leaves. Inflorescence many-flowered, dense to moderately lax, often with several branches. Basal bracts well developed though usually short. Perianth segments dark brown, oblong; outer obtuse, mucronate, ±conspicuously keeled at base; inner usually longer, with broad scarious apical auricles. Stamens shorter than perianth; anthers 1.2-1.9 mm, several times longer than filaments. Capsule globose to ovoid-trigonous, 2.5-4 mm, pyramidal at apex, mucronate, dark brown. Seeds 25-40 per capsule, 1.5-2 mm, appendages subequal. Fl. 4-6. Maritime sands and shores of saline lakes, nr s.l.-50 m.
