Differs from I. histrix var. histrix in having wider leaves, up to 2 mm broad, and in having megaspores 600-800 microns, distinctly foveolate, with prominent, often crested, ridges; microspores minutely papillose. Spores ripe 5-7. In similar habitats to I. histrix.
