Plant 70-150 cm. Rhizome stout; clothed with fibrous remains of old leaf bases. Leaves ensiform, prominently ribbed, 1.3-3 cm broad, equalling inflorescence; upper cauline leaves bract-like. Stem 1-2-branched, each branch bearing 1-3 flowers. Bracts and bracteoles 5-7.5 cm, submembranous. Pedicels c. 2 cm, elongating in fruit. Perianth tube 1-1.3 cm. Flowers yellow with a zone of brownish markings or veins in centre of lamina of falls; falls 5-7.5 cm, lamina ovate to suborbicular, 2.5-4 cm broad, narrowed to a claw 0.7 cm broad; standards lanceolate, 2-2.5 x 0.3-0.5 cm; style branches 3-4.5 x 1 cm with erect lobes 1-1.7 x 0.6-0.8 cm. Capsule ± cylindrical, 4-7 xc. 1.5 cm, with a short beak. Fl. 4-5. Streamsides, ponds, ditches and freshwater marshes, s.l.-1200 m.
