Robust herbs to 50 cm. Stems simple, stout, often several from a basal rosette, of 6-10 internodes; flowers forming a terminal head and also in axils of upper leaves. Leaves 30-100 x 10-30 mm, ovate-lanceolate, subacute, 3-nerved, ± connate at base and, especially lower ones, forming a sheath. Flowers 4-merous, sessile. Calyx 8-15 mm, divided to c. ½ ; lobes triangular. Corolla blue, often purplish and green-marked outside, 15-30 mm; intermediate lobes irregular, short. Capsule narrow, sessile or subsessile. Fl. 7-9. Woodland margins and grassland, 800-2500 m.
