Almost completely glabrous caespitose perennial to 1 m, usually with no axillary leafy shoots. Cauline leaves linear-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, 4-7 x 0.5-1 cm, acute to subacute, entire. Ray-leaves broadly ovate or elliptic-ovate to elliptic-lanceolate. Raylet-leaves suborbicular, ovate-rhombic or broadly ovate to elliptic-ovate, 0.5-1.5 x 0.5-1.5 cm, rounded-cuneate. Rays 5-8, tri- or tetrachotomous then once or twice dichotomous; axillary rays 4-13. Glands 2-3 mm diam. Fruit trilobate, 5 mm diam., with 2 rows of tubercles on each lobe, sparingly pilose; styles 3-4 mm, united for half their length. Seeds ovoid, 3 mm, smooth, pinkish-brown. Fl. 6-7. Rocky slopes, screes, eroded clay hills, dry river-banks, shingle, scrub, sandy fields, partly cultivated hillsides, 650-2100 m.
