Erect pubescent biennial; flowering stems 7-20 cm, arising from a large basal rosette. Leaves ovate, acute, pubescent, plane, purplish, sessile; basal leaves 1-3 x 0,7-1,5 cm, forming a dense rosette; cauline leaves smaller and more distant. Inflorescence a lax, 30-150-flowered, corymbose panicle 5-12 cm wide. Flowers 5-merous, pedicellate; sepals 2-4 mm, acute; petals scarlet, 6-8 mm; stamens 10; follicles sparsely pubescent, reddish, erecto-patent. Fl. 6-8. Rocky slopes, screes, 1200-2900 m.
