Perennial 30-70 cm tall. Leaves linear, long-acuminate, 2,5 mm wide. Bracts coriaceous, ovate-oblong, cordate, shorter than the capitulum. Bracteoles 4, less than ½ the calyx length, coriaceous, pale, ovate, aristate, margins membranous. Calyx 16-20 x 3-4.5 mm, widest in lower half; teeth 4-6 mm, linear, mucronate. Petal limb 4-5 mm, red, dentate, barbulate. Fl. 5-9. Sand-dunes, volcanic and limestone slopes, steppe,fields, open woodland, rocks, 400-2300 m.
