Glandular-pubescent annual. Stems ± erect, dichotomously and divaricately branched, 6-20 cm. Leaves ovate-oblong to lanceolate-oblong, ± obtuse, pilose. Inflorescence lax to condensed, many-flowered. Bracts herbaceous. Calyx somewhat to strongly inflated in fruit. Sepals ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 7-11 mm, with scarious margins, pilose, often glandular. Petals shorter than the sepals. Capsules long-exserted from the calyx, 14-24 mm, opening by flat teeth. 2 subspecies may be recognised:

  1. Inflorescence dense; calyx little inflated in fruit subsp. dichotomum
  2. Inflorescence rather lax; calyx much inflated in fruit subsp. inflatum
