Annual, covered throughout its vegetative parts with short, rough hairs, 0.4-3.5 m tall; stem sulcate. Leaflets 3-7cm, long-acuminate at apex; petiole long. Inflorescence with short rough and also glandular hairs. Tepals of male flowers oblong-elliptic, 3-6 mm, green with pale margins. Female tepal broadly elliptic, long-acuminate on abaxial side. Achene broadly ellipsoid, somewhat compressed, keeled, 3-5 mm, Fl. principally 6-9. Cultivated for its seeds and as a fibre plant; also subspontaneous.
Widely grown in many warmer parts of the world for fibre, oil and narcotic resin, occurring as a casual in ports, on rubbish tips etc. in cooler regions. Probably indigenous in C. & W. Asia, but its exact native area blurred by cultivation from ancient times.
