Biennial herb. Stems ± erect, 30-100 cm, usually branched above, densely adpressed-pubescent or subtomentose. Leaves ovate-oblanceolate; basal 15-18 x 5-7 cm ; median 3-7 x 0,75-3 cm, attenuate at base, subsessile, apex acute, margins denticulate, sparsely pilose above, moderately to densely adpressed lanate-pubescent beneath. Capitula obconical, disciform, usually numerous in rather dense subcorymbose panicles. Involucre 0,75-1 cm broad; phyllaries imbricate, 5-6-seriate; outer oblong-ovate, 3-5 x 1,25-1,5 mm, with spreading, pubescent, herbaceous tips; inner linear-lanceolate, c. 8-12 x. 1 mm, scarious, sometimes purplish, ciliate. Female flowers 1-seriate, tubular, 4,5-6,5 mm, subligulate at apex. Disc flowers 5-7 mm. Achenes 2-2,25 mm, sparsely pubescent at apex. Pappus brownish, 6-7 mm, hairs c. 30, scabrous, connate at base. Fl. 7-9. On shaded rocky slopes, 25-1800 m.
