Bulb oblong-ovoid, 0.8-1 cm diam.; outer tunics greyish, membranous, torn at tip into fibres; bulblets yellowish, acuminate, stalked, enclosed within sheath on lower part of stem. Stem 35-60 cm. Leaves 2-3, linear-semiterete, 1-2 mm broad, almost fistulose, canaliculate below. Spathe 2-valved, much shorter than umbel; valves ovate, blunt, torn. Umbel globose, 1.5-2 cm diam., dense. Pedicels short, scarcely as long as flowers. Perianth cylindrical to ovoid; segments dark purple or dark maroon-purple , finally straw-coloured, 4-5 mm, minutely scabrid outside; outer broadly ovate, inner broadly elliptic, obtuse, slightly overtopping outer ones. Outer fllaments mostly c. as long as perianth segments, not exserted; inner with shortly exserted anthers, median cusp half as long as much exserted lateral ones. Style 4-5 mm, exserted, persistent. Capsule globose, c. 5 mm. Fl. 5-6. Pinus and Juniperus forest, calcareous scrub, scree, steppe, fallow fields, 100-1800 m.
